At Forefield Community Infant and Nursery School, we believe that Relationships and Health Education is a vital part of every child’s personal development and wellbeing. Through our curriculum, children learn about healthy relationships, friendships, families, feelings, safety and respect in an age-appropriate and supportive environment. Our programme is carefully planned to reflect the needs and maturity of our pupils and is delivered within a positive, inclusive and values-based framework.
In line with the Department for Education’s statutory guidance, Relationships Education helps children develop the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to build positive relationships, keep themselves safe, and thrive both now and in the future. As children grow up in an increasingly complex world, both online and offline, it is important that they learn how to recognise healthy relationships, understand their emotions, and make safe and informed choices.
As an infant school, our focus is on Relationships Education and Health Education. Parents should be aware that Relationships Education is a statutory part of the primary curriculum and, therefore, children cannot be withdrawn from these lessons. We teach this content sensitively and appropriately, ensuring that all children feel safe, respected and included.
We value the important partnership between home and school and encourage parents and carers to engage with the curriculum. Our Relationships and Health Education Policy provides further information about what is taught and how learning is delivered across the school. Should you have any questions, Mrs Whitmore, our Relationships and Health Education Lead, would be delighted to speak with you.
Please explore the documents below for more detailed information about the curriculum and the topics covered in each year group.
At Forefield we believe it is vitally important that all children gain an understanding of the world they are growing up in, and learn how to live alongside and show respect for a diverse range of people this is already a key part of our PSHE and RSE curriculum. We have bought some pictures books (please see picture) to add to our classroom libraries and have already been using them in classes. The pictures, illustrations and stories in these books are absolutely beautiful and help the children explore the world around them and help them to see things from a different point of view and challenge children’s thinking.
We wanted to share them with you in case any have become firm favourites! 😊

As part of our consultation process with Parents we send out links through Parent App showcasing new resources or content to the curriculum. When the new RSE curriculum was launched we sent out a survey through Parent App. This survey asked parents/ carers to read the draft policies for RSE and PSHE and then asked parents for any feedback. Below you will find the covering letter for the initial parent survey and there is also the feedback letter from the comments made.
