Welcome to Forest School

What is Forest School?

What happens during the Forest school session?

Once the children have changed into their Forest School clothing, they gather in our outdoor lodge before making their way to one of our two Forest School sites, North Wood or South Wood. Each session begins at the Fire Circle, where children revisit important safety routines, learn how to care for the natural environment, and reflect on the values of kindness, respect and teamwork. Children then take part in a carefully planned teaching session linked to specific learning objectives from our progressive Forest School curriculum, ensuring that knowledge and skills are built upon and developed throughout their time at Forefield.

Following this, children engage in a range of adult-led and child-initiated activities, providing opportunities for both structured learning and independent exploration. They are encouraged to collaborate, problem-solve and use their imagination through experiences such as den building, role play, nature investigations, creative projects, tool use and practical outdoor challenges. Children are given the freedom to explore, follow their interests and direct aspects of their own learning, fostering independence, confidence and a strong sense of ownership. This balance of purposeful teaching and child-led discovery lies at the heart of our Forest School approach, helping children to develop resilience, curiosity and a lifelong appreciation of the natural world.

What to wear in Forest School?

  • Warm hat
  • Waterproof coat and trousers
  • Warm socks and wellies
  • Snood
  • Gloves
  • No shorts!

Tip: Layers work best, it’s easier for children to take off a layer if they get too warm.

Please be sure to label all clothing with your child’s name.

You will receive the following leaflet when your child starts forest school… keep it on the fridge, we all need a reminder!
